What’s up guys?!?! Michael with Michael Talks Metals back for more metal madness today!!!! Episode one hundred and thirty seven today in our current series. For the last few weeks, we have been talking about popular Copper alloys categorized as Brass, Bronze, or Cupro Nickel ………

Today we are going to introduce you to an alloy of Copper and Beryllium.

And so our alloy today is Copper Beryllium…. or perhaps you say Beryllium Copper?

CDA 172 or  UNS designation C17200.

The alloy can be strengthened by solution treatment followed by age hardening or by a combination of cold work and age hardening.

Copper Beryllium is typically used in parts requiring a combination of its high strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal and electrical conductivity or low magnetic susceptibility.

It has found applications in most industries with many applications in aerospace and petrochemical components.

Chemical Composition – UNS C17200
Beryllium1.80 – 2.00 %
Cobalt + Nickel0.20 %  Minimum
Cobalt + Nickel + Iron0.60 %  Maximum
Aluminum0.20 %  Maximum
Silicon0.20 %  Maximum
CopperRemainder
Sum of named elements99.5 %  Minimum

Mechanical properties vary by heat treated condition, section size,  mill product and specification.

Common Tempers:

TB00  (A)   Solution Treated

TD04  (H)   Solution treated and cold worked to full hard

TF00  (AT)  Solution and precipitation treated

TH04  (HT) Solution treated, cold worked full hard, and precipitation treated

Applications have too many specifications and standards to list here.  For the 137 th time, we remind you that specifications and part requirements can alter what we have shown you here today. Do not forget to CHECK THE SPECS!!!!!  Twice
