What’s up guys?!?!?! This is Michael with Michael Talks Metal back for some Aluminum Allegories.
Today we are starting a series of videos on a lighter subject…… Aluminum or Aluminium if you are from Britain.
Many aluminum alloys have AMS specification and we will review the most commercially important alloys and tempers in the next few weeks. In a previous video, we went through the definitions of the various tempers. Click here now if you would like to review.
First up is alloy 2024, a high strength alloy available in all common products and many tempers. It has high strength and good machinability but only fair corrosion resistance and anodizing ability.
Its UNS designation is UNS A92024.
|Chemical Composition||UNS A92024|
|Copper||3.8 – 4.9 %|
|Manganese||0.3 – 0.9 %|
|Magnesium||1.2 – 1.8%|
|Chromium||0.10 % Max|
|Zinc||0.25 % Max|
|Titanium||0.15 % Max|
|Other||0.05 % Each & 0.15% Total|
Density .100 lbs per cubic inch
Mean Coefficient of Thermal Expansion from room temperature to 212 deg F:
12.7 microinch per inch per deg F
Comparative Characteristics can be used to evaluate different alloys and tempers:
All tempers of 2024 are rated D for general corrosion
Tempers T3,T4,T351,T3510 and T3511 :
C for Stress Corrosion Cracking
B for Machinability
B for Stress Corrosion Cracking
B for Machinability
Now as you can see, there’s a great deal of specs. The reason why is that with Aluminum, they consider not only the grade and shape, but also the temper when designating the specification. Any questions, please ask in the comments below.
Common AMS Specifications, product and temper:
|AMS 4035||Sheet, Plate||O|
|AMS 4087||Drawn Seamless Tubing||O|
|AMS 4152||Extruded Bars, Rods, Wire, Shapes, Tubing||T3|
|AMS 4086||Seamless Hydraulic Tubing||T3|
|AMS 4088||Drawn Seamless Tubing||T3|
|AMS 4037||Sheet, Plate||T3 / T351|
|AMS 4164||Extruded Bars, Rods, Wire, Shapes, Tubing||T3510|
|AMS 4165||Extruded Bars, Rods, Wire, Shapes, Tubing||T3511|
|AMS 4120||Cold Finished Bars, Rod, Wire||T4 / T351|
Commercial specifications are too numerous for us to detail here.
Additional specifications and part requirements can alter what we have shown you here today.
SO CHECK THE SPECS !!!!!!!!!!!
